Magnolia Bakery, Tokyo

Magnolia Bakery has been on my to eat list for a long time and everytime I was looking for the perfect cupcake recipe Magnolia and The Hummingbird Bakery would keep popping up. It is one of the most popular cupcake bakeries I’ve heard of and they’ve made appearances in Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada. You can pretty much sense my excitement here can’t you?

There’s a window at the front where you can see them make the cupcakes. That famous swirl they do is bloody hard to master (maybe for a newb like me) so I stood there mesmerised as they expertly swirled the frosting on.

After stuffing my face at Dominique Ansel Bakery I could only fit in one cupcake so I had to choose wisely. I decided on the matcha cupcake and it had a lovely light green tea flavour but the shocker was the velvet smooth matcha meringue buttercream. There was also no grit from the sugar in the buttercream! *swoon* The cupcake itself was really different to what I’ve ever had. It was perfectly moist, a tad fudgy yet there was still a lightness to it. Eating the silky buttercream with this spongey cupcake was soo good.

Matcha Cupcake available only during May (¥480)

Would definitely come back to stuff my face full of cupcakes and try all their different flavours. When I went there were no lines and it was pretty empty – I think it’s the first time I hadn’t had to line up in Japan.
